Where are your favourite places to buy Cloth Diapers?

I used to shop at KasihkuSayangku & MyBabyPitstop. I just love the Blueberry diapers & BumGenius. Now I have my own store, I don’t shop as much as I used to. But I still do collect Blueberry , though. I simply love their prints.

You mentioned that you’re a lazy bum, but still manage to Cloth Diaper. Share your tips on doing Cloth Diaper laundry!

Haha, this is really a good question & you asked the right person. I don’t do manual pre-rinse except for poo. Using the dry pail method, I separate the inserts & covers into 2 laundry bags. I do my laundry every 2 days. On laundry day, (using washing machine settings) I Wash & Spin with no detergent, then the Full Cycle, with a little detergent (around 1 tablespoon), AND select with maximum water input. After that, I dry it. It’s effortless! Usually I put in the baby’s clothes in my Full cycle steps. That will save a lot your laundry time, electricity & water.

How is your husband helping you out with Cloth Diapering?

Oh he does help, but I can’t stand it if he puts the Blueberry inserts for example into another brand of diaper. Most of the time I do the laundry my self which takes only 5 – 10 minutes. My partner is glad that I’ve made the decision to use cloth diapers & he finds the modern cloth diapers very cute!

What are your favourite brand of Cloth Diapers?

My all time favourite is BumGenius. I have never had a leak with them, not once! Currently, my favourite is Envibum. It has very nice minkee fabric outer and is suitably designed for a lazy bum like me. Hehe, I love Envibum!

What important advice would you give to those new to Cloth Diapering?

• Don’t get intimidated by the price of Cloth Diapers. Nowadays, there are plenty of options. Prefolds, one size covers, pockets diapers, etc – Just take your pick! Even if you choose only to cloth diaper during the day or for night time, it will have a huge impact in saving our earth.
• Don’t get intimidated by the myth that its time consuming. It is NOT. We Malaysians are lucky because the water bidet (aka diaper sprayer) is very common everywhere. For laundering tips, try out my suggested laundry steps above. It’s so easy & ideal for lazy people (like me!) Hehehe
• Cloth diapers can still cause rashes. However, trust me that the diaper rash that your baby gets if he/she is on disposable diapers is much worse compared to when using Cloth Diapers. With Cloth Diapers, you get tiny red bumps at most, & it is easily treated. I speak from my horrible experience – My poor baby… Her skin around the diaper area (from genitals to around the butt) literally came off! Everything was super red, and it hurt her horribly that when she pees she will wail and cry! I felt so horrible at that time, I even cried. This hapenned with all 3 different brands of disposable diapers she was using. After that episode, I vowed that I only want to use Cloth Diapers on my baby…

Where are your favourite places to buy Cloth Diapers?
Initially, I purchased from Mia Bambina E-store. The former owner Sandra has been a great help on educating me about Cloth Diapers. Then, I discovered Tiny Tapir, and Li the owner has been a great help too. Soon onwards I bought everywhere… at Lil Danzell, Ez Motherhood, My Baby Pit Stop, Baby Tots & Mom, My Cheeky Boo, Baby-Mel, and also blogshops like Zizitots Collection. I have shopped in other places online too apart from the ones I’ve mentioned. I can say that I don’t have any favourite stores as I love to frequent any online store!

You mentioned you love bargain hunting. Can you share some tips about how you look for “the best Cloth Diaper deals”?
I AM a Bargain Hunter! Before I purchase, I will first visit the DiapersAsia Forum. Just to go through the different types of Cloth Diapers available for sale and see whether they will suit my needs. Sometimes I will visit even without any necessity, I have an urge to check out latest ad postings by Cloth Diaper moms over there. Not all the listings are preloved (second hand) Cloth Diapers. I find that many moms have brand new diapers which are unused in their collections, so they will put them back up for Sale in the forums.

How many Cloth Diapers do you have in your stash, and which are your favorites?
Previously, I had about 50 pieces, mostly Pocket Diapers and some All-In-Ones. However, I slowly de-stash my diapers by re-selling or giving them away. One of the reason is because I got tired of pocket diapers and the ones with the plain colours. Now I am on the lookout for cute and fancy prints, and prefer All-In-One diapers. In fact my almost 2 years old toddler even has his own preference for Cloth Diapers. He would choose the ones with the fancy prints for him to wear!

All-In-One diapers are my favourites, even though they can be very expensive to own. However, it is so convenient! The only drawback is that they take a longer time to dry, so the next best option is the All-In-Two diapers. I can unsnap the soaker for washing and the outer shell can still be reused.

As a full-time working mother, how do you dedicate your time to Cloth Diaper?
I wash the soiled Cloth Diapers once in two days – a full load in the washing machine. I use the dry pail method – before washing day, I chuck all the soiled diapers in a covered diaper pail. For the diapers which has a poopy mess, I will give them several rinses without any detergent, and then they are washed along with the other cloth diapers. All this can be done right after I come home from work, while I take a bath and the washing machine will do its job. It’s not a hassle at all.

How do you Cloth Diaper during the night, any particular system/method?
For the past year, I reserve particular brands for nighttime use which are All-In-Two type diapers like Grobaby & Itti Bitti SIO. For both brands, the soakers are made from bamboo, and I love the fact that it is very absorbant yet dry on my baby’s skin. I never used pocket diapers for nighttime, but recently I love using Knickernappies diapers for night use. It is One-Sized Pocket Diaper with side-snaps, and what makes it truly a nighttime diaper is the special insert “Loopy Doo”. It is a combination of hemp and microfibre. This brand was as good as using All-In-Twos. I never liked Fitted Diapers before, but recently I have caught the bug, I want to give them a try by combining Fitted Diapers with wool soaker as the cover. I’ll review it soon in my blog, wait for it!

Do you think Cloth Diapering is an expensive thing to do?

This is a very subjective matter. It all depends on us. A piece of cloth diaper can be very cheap or very expensive. However I would rather label them as “Mostly Affordable” for the lower priced diapers, and “Slightly Affordable” for the higher priced ones. You might get carried away, like myself – I got addicted in having to acquire those cute & nice printed Cloth Diapers. And if the cloth diapers work well for you, you might be willing to part with a huge amount money to own more of them. If the prices of new “expensive” Cloth Diapers scare you, my suggestion is to mix your Cloth Diaper stash with preloved ones because some of them are really worth buying, and they come with a cheaper price tag.

1) Where are your favorite places to buy Cloth Diapers?

I went through all the e-stores in Malaysia and I must admit each store provide good Cloth Diapers and accessories,  but my ultimate favorite for purchasing Fitted Diapers will be at everythingbabything.com store.

2) Why do you say Cloth Diapering gives you satisfaction?
It gives me full satisfaction because I know that I am doing my small part for saving mother earth. Also, the fact that Cloth Diapers are reusable and can be kept for the next baby/kid is considered a really good deal for money.

3) How is the support of your other family members about you Cloth Diapering?
Really supportive,  in fact they find Cloth Diapering to be more interesting for use compared to disposable diapers. They loved the cute prints and the durability of Cloth Diapers.

4) How many Cloth Diapers do you have in your stash, and which are your favorites?
I should have at least around 30 to 40 pieces. I love all of them because each one has its own special features!! The All-in-Two (AI2) Diapers are very trim and I can easily put them under short pants without anyone noticing them. Pocket Diapers are the ones I always reach for daily while at home, while Fitted Diapers with wool is my overnight workhorse!!

5) What were the most difficult things you had to cope with while Cloth Diapering?
The ammonia build up in the diapers and using them while traveling. Ammonia build up can cause the diapers, especially the insert to have unpleasant urine-like smell, and I need to strip wash them once a month. As for traveling, I only Cloth Diaper during night as my precious one tends to get rashes whenever she’s put on with a disposable diaper during the day.

6) What is an important Cloth Diaper care tip that you can share with us?
When washing Cloth Diapers, use only a little bit of detergent. The amount of water you use is also important. Make sure you do not add any bleach and softener. These will shorten the life span of the Cloth Diapers.

Mengenai Nik Ha:

Nik Ha adalah seorang ibu bekerjaya beranak dua. Beliau menggunakan Cloth Diaper sepenuhnya semenjak anak perempuan beliau berumur 3 bulan. Seorang yang amat “addicted” dengan Cloth Diapers, sehingga terpaksa “menghalang diri” daripada pembelian yang kerap atas sebab lari bajet. (Saya faham permasalahan anda… Hehe).

1) Apakah yang mendorong anda untuk menggunakan Cloth Diapers?

Ingin berjimat, saya membayangkan setiap keping ‘diaper’ yang dibuang ke tong sampah seolah-olah saya membuang 50 sen. Setiap hari saya akan membuang RM3, setahun jumlahnya RM1095!!! Juga, saya ingin mengurangkan pendedahan kepada bahan kimia dalam lampin pakai buang kepada anak saya.

2) Dari manakah anda mendapat info untuk ber-Cloth Diaper?

Rujukan utama adalah Forum Susuibu.com dan Blog Diyaluna.com. Selain itu saya juga selalu merujuk pelbagai website di internet yang berkaitan dengan Cloth Diapers.

3) Apakah masalah paling sukar yang pernah dialami selama menggunakan Cloth Diapers, dan bagaimana anda mengatasinya?

Bayi mengalami ruam dan kulit menggelupas. Bagi mengatasinya, saya melakukan ’stripwash’ menggunakan cahaya matahari, cuka, soda dan rendam seketika dengan air suam. Saya juga menggunakan ‘nappy liner’ dan krim Ezerra. Beberapa bulan selepas itu masalah tersebut telah dapat diatasi. Kita hanya perlu kerap menukar Cloth Diaper dan menggunakan sabun yang sesuai untuk membasuh jika kulit bayi agak sensitif.

4) Apakah jenis Cloth Diaper yang pernah anda gunakan.  Jenis manakah yang paling anda gemari?

Pocket One Size Snap Button & velcro & All In One Snap Button & Velcro Saya menggemari kedua-duanya kerana boleh digunakan sejak bayi kecil hingga 3 tahun, mudah dipakai, cepat kering.

5) Bagaimana anda menguruskan rutin harian ber-Cloth Diaper memandangkan anda seorang ibu yang bekerja?

Saya membasuh selang 2-3 hari sekali. Saya mempunyai hampir 30 keping Cloth Diaper. Waktu pembasuhan biasanya awal pagi (antara 4.30-6 pagi) atau malam (10-12 malam) bergantung kepada masa yang terluang kerana anak saya menyusu badan sepenuhnya. Selepas waktu bekerja dia akan ‘melekap’ dengan umminya sepanjang masa . Pada hari minggu, Cloth Diapers akan dijemur di bawah cahaya matahari untuk menghilangkan sebarang kesan & menyahbau. Setelah kering, ClothDiaper dilipat siap (dimasukkan ‘insert’ beserta lapik nappy liner bagi AIO untuk memudahkan basuhan jika bayi buang air besar). Tiada masalah menguruskan rutin penggunaan Cloth Diaper walaupun bekerja kerana ianya dibasuh dengan mesin setelah dibilas dan dijemur di bawah kipas pada waktu malam (pada hari bekerja). Ianya cepat kering dan boleh digunakan pada waktu pagi.

6) Apakah nasihat yang boleh anda berikan kepada mereka yang bekerja, tetapi ingin mula ber-Cloth Diaper?

Melakukan ‘survey’, banyak membaca dan bertanya tentang Cloth Diaper, mencuba pelbagai jenis untuk melihat kesesuaian pada bayi dan memilih jenis Cloth Diaper yang paling mudah & praktikal. Peringkat permulaan bolehlah mula menggunakan Cloth Diaper dan lampin pakai buang. Apabila sudah biasa dengan rutin penggunaan/penjagaan bolehlah menggunakannya sepenuhnya.
