Cloth Diaper Malaysia: Hello Wannie! It’s a pleasure to have you here for a chat. Can you tell us a little bit about you, your family (your little hero too!) and finally about your business, My Cheeky Boo?

Wannie: Hi there! About me, I’m a 22 years old, and working full time in a travel agency in Kota Kinabalu. As some may know, I’m a Chinese and a converted Muslim, so you can call me by Bonnie or Wannie. I’m a mommy to my naughty cutie pie – Watari who is 43 months now, and a loving wife to my husband – Wirah.

Wannie: It is definitely challenging because it’s not easy when you’re a wife and also a mother. Not trying to complain, but with a lil one around, chores to be done at home seems never-ending. Apart from cooking, laundry, cleaning, now I have more tasks to do for the business, like inventory checking, email replying, orders packing etc. Add to that, I’m also working full time, so it’s like 2 or 3 times the things that you need to do in a day compared to before. I always wished I could have 48 hours a day now, so I could get good sleep every night, haha! But because I love my family, I’m passionate about what I’m doing with My Cheeky Boo, and also enjoy my full time job at the travel agency, I know I will be able to manage all tasks (at least I keep trying).

My advice for mothers /wives who would like to start their own business is to ensure the business that you want to run/venture is something you absolutley love, something you are passionate about, something you won’t get bored of, and something that would keep you motivated all the time. That’s the key to stay strong with your business and for its success. Without these, it will be difficult for the business to sustain long term. Of course, you must also have faith in HIM, and have support from close ones and family

Wannie: My main goal is to promote cloth diapers through My Cheeky Boo, so of course you can find a lot of cloth diapers and cloth diapering accessories here. We also offer products for mommies and little ones, such as cloth menstrual pads, ring slings, breastfeeding products, natural soaps, kids apparel and accessories. I try to offer a wide range of products for parents to shop, so it would be a conveinet shopping experience for them as they can look for many things in one place.

Let’s get to know the owner of LampinKain.com herself, Azlina

Cloth Diaper Malaysia: It’s great pleasure to have you share about cloth diapering with us. First and foremost, when did you start LampinKain.com and how did you plan and manage the business in the beginning?

Azlina: LampinKain.com was officially opened in July 2008. My beloved hubby helped me a lot in the beginning (and up til now . We decided to open an online business because of its low initial setup cos. Through readings about online business, we officially launched LampinKain.com. Since both of us have an education in Information Technology, the technological aspect is not “alien” to us, and makes it easier for us to enter the online world. The most important thing to success in a business is to have good marketing skills and I’m still learning about this matter.

Cloth Diaper Malaysia: As an entrepreneurial mother, can you share with us how you balance between family and work (and also cloth diapering )?

Azlina: I am a FTWM (Full Time Working Mom) and also maid-less . Quite tough at first, but with planning, discipline in execution and lots of help from my hubby – that’s the secret recipe to manage all this. “Love what you do” is another important motto to believe in. I love Cloth Diapering, and seeing cute little bums in front of me (my lil’s ones) is the moment I’ve always waited for. I also love sewing, thus I love perfecting my Cloth Diapers’ designs.

Cloth Diaper Malaysia: LampinKain’s diapers are made by Malaysian WAHMs. Can you tell us more about the process and production of LampinKain’s cloth diapers? (eg: materials used, workmanship, choice of fabric, quality control, etc etc)

Azlina: Coming up with a good Cloth Diaper design is the first thing that needs to be accomplished. I started sewing Cloth Diapers 3 years ago, and it took 1 year to come out with my own Cloth Diaper pattern. Initially the Cloth Diaper pattern was tested by my lil’ ones and some of my close friends’ children. Satisfied with the results, I then decided to come out with our first Cloth Diaper which was LampinKain Pocket Diaper which were Sized, or also known as “Perfect Sized”. This year, we came out with the One Size Pocket Diaper. Before mass production, the Cloth Diaper was tested by a group of Cloth Diaper mommies to ensure that the fitting is just right for most of children in Malaysia.

The next important thing in creating our Cloth Diapers is to ensure that we’re only using quality materials. I’m a working mother and I hate to handle something that needs special care such as hand wash, etc. Thus the materials used must be able to be washed in washing machine (at least) and even dried in dryer. As this were our objectives, rigorous testing was conducted before mass production.

As our Cloth Diapers are made by WAHMs, ensuring excellent workmanship is quite a challenge. In my opinion, to manage this clear instructions needs to be provided to them, besides close monitoring of their work.

Quality control measures are taken to ensure that only excellent product are sold to the market, while non-conforming product (as long as it does not affect its functionality) is sold off as seconds. We always benchmark our Cloth Diaper with other Cloth Diapers in the market to ensure that our quality is better or at least at par with them.

We’re committed to provide high quality products. However, as every child is different from each other, they might be cases that our diaper mightw not fit themell, or the diaper does not meet our customers’ expectation. Don’t worry about that, our return policy would definitely ease their minds.

Cloth Diaper Malaysia: Can you tell us more about LampinKain’s diapers (Pocket Diapers & Fitteds)?

Azlina: Our objective is to provide a product that is superior quality but at affordable price. In short, it should be value for money. Our pocket diaper features side snapping to avoid wing drop problem which is common in front closure diaper (for skinny babies or toddler). All snaps are hidden and would not touch your child’s delicate skin. Inserts made from hemp, bamboo or cotton (or any fabric that would shrink after wash) is pre-shrunk before sewing. Thus it would not shrink and look “funny” after wash and reduce pre-washing time to “prep” the inserts.

Our new One Size bamboo fitted diapers features 12 layers of fabric with option of additional doublers to make it 15 layers! Outer layer is made from adorable cotton knits prints. Soaker and body of the diaper are made from organic bamboo fleece. Inner layer of the diaper (fabric that touches your baby’s bum) is made from either organic bamboo velour or wicking fabric. As the fabrics used have a little stretch, it will fit snugly to your baby’s bum. Bamboo fabric (velour or fleece) used in our fitted diaper is already pre-shrunked.

We also provide service for custom made diapers as we know that every child is different. Be a designer of your own diaper and let your imagination create the perfect diaper for your little ones. A bright colored diaper for a cheerful child would be a perfect match!

Cloth Diaper Malaysia: How would you suggest to use LampinKain diapers for: newborns; heavywetting infants; active toddlers.

Azlina: Newborns: For teeny-weeny baby (less than 3 kg), we would propose to use pocket diaper size S as One Size pocket diapers would be too big for them. One Size pocket diaper would only fit 3kg babies and above. One Size Fitted diaper with cover is also an excellent choice for newborn.

Heavy wetting infants: A Fitted diaper with added doublers (15 layers) with cover is an excellent choice for heavy wetting infants.

Active toddler: Our pocket diaper is an excellent choice for active toddlers as it can act as pull-up pants if the side snap closure is snapped-on prior to putting the diaper on. This would definitely make the task of diaper changing a wriggly toddler much easier. Our innovative design gives you a side snapping Pocket Diaper which allows you to adjust the waist and legs separately to best fit your baby’s unique shape. Also, with our exclusive Perfect Size pocket system, the diaper will stay in place no matter how active your baby is. Another advantage is that snap closures would prevent curious and active toddler from taking off their own diapers.

Cloth Diaper Malaysia: What are your plans for LampinKain in the future?

Cloth Diaper Malaysia: It’s a pleasure to have you on Cloth Diaper Malaysia, Angie! Firstly, may we know the reasons of starting My Baby Pit Stop online store? What was your aim?

Angie: I started to know about Cloth Diapers a few years ago when I was diapering my eldest daughter. It was a great pleasure to have known friends who introduced me to them. Since the birth of my child, I didn’t like to use disposable diapers and I will only use them when needed which was before we came across Cloth Diapers. My parents used lampins on us when we were babies because they were against disposable diapers.

My Baby Pit Stop started in early 2007, 6 months after the birth of our eldest daughter. The main reason for starting the store is to share about Cloth Diapers with our friends and family. There were not many stores that were selling them at that time Good things need to be shared with more people, and I aim to encourage parents to change their mindset about using Cloth Diapers.

I am a “green mommy”, or at least I try to be a “green” person. Whenever possible, I do not use tissue papers but use a wipe or hanky instead. I also do not receive plastic bags when I buy things outside. Even if I forget to bring my reusable shopping bag, I will simply carry my things in my hands.

For me, as long as we, as parents are doing our part to reduce the usage of disposable diapers, even 1 a day at a time I am very happy.

This is my favourite Autumnz diaper: Minky Snap Button (Moo Moo Cow). Very affordable!

CDM: You are a full-time working mother, and you manage an online store – you must be SUPER busy! How do you manage your time working, being a mother and wife?

Angie: Just like any modern woman today, we are filled with many different roles in our lives, being a mom, a wife, a daughter, a sister and the list goes on… I have to say that women are born with the skills to multitask and to be able to handle many things and ‘roles’ at one time.

For my family, I will say that it is very important things like having a strong family foundation, and having the necessary fundamental requirements available and the rest will be smooth sailing.

I don’t want to bore you with the boring time management stuff but I do things in an orderly manner and that’s how we can make good use of the 24 hours in our daily lives.

I have encountered first time cloth diapering mommies who made mistakes by buying many diapers from the same brand only to discover it is not suitable for their child. I was surfing around the internet reading Cloth Diaper Mom blogs from elsewhere around the world. I have a few favourites that I subscribe on my Google Reader to keep me updated on the latest news and developments in the Cloth Diaper world

I thought I would share with you a very interesting topic about Cloth Diapering a Newborn from Cloth Diaper Outlet Blog. This Mom blogger from the USA describes her experience of using the many different types and brands of Cloth Diapers on her newborn baby. It’s quite informative, and she adds in a lot of pictures too!

As for me, my Cloth Diapering a newborn episode started with lampins (Flat Diapers), Prefold Diapers and Diaper Covers. (You may read about my personal experiences Cloth Diapering my newborn here). The other types of diapers I had in my stash (like my Pocket Diapers and Fitted Diapers) were reserved for use later on when I was more confident with using and caring for the Cloth Diapers, and until I had better management of my newborn baby (It ain’t that easy when you have to take care of a newborn on your own with no extra help during the day).

It would be very very nice to use and experiment with the many types of Cloth Diapers on your newborn. And Oh My God, the small little sizes and prints looks super adorable on tiny newborn baby bottoms! And, also the fact that Cloth Diapers are the more natural way to diaper your precious little baby – better for baby’s delicate skin . Perhaps on my next baby I’ll be able to do so, InsyaAllah

I have upgraded myself from the Prefold+Cover and Pocket Diaper to a new type of Cloth Diapers: the All-In-Twos (AI2s).

What are All-In-Two (AI2) Cloth Diapers?

• They are similar to All-In-Ones (AIOs) type because they have all the components in one diaper: A waterproof outer and the absorbent soaker.
• The difference is that the soakers, which are secured with Snaps, can be easily removed from the outer (diaper cover).
• It’s easy to use because when you change the diapers, and the diaper is not soiled (cover is still clean), you just remove the wet soaker and replace with another clean one!
• It’s convenient because if you travel or go out, you can just bring extra soakers instead of an entire diaper – Saves a lot of room in your diaper bag!
• Because the soakers can be removed, it allows thorough washing of the soakers and drying times are also faster (compared to AIOs). Also, there’s less laundry to do!
• It is more expensive than the other types of cloth diapers.
• However, in my opinion they can be economical – you just need a few pieces of covers and you can buy many many soakers to use and rotate instead of buying additional cloth diapers!
• The outer cover can also be used as a diaper cover with Fitted Diapers and Prefolds!

I love the simplicity, uniqueness and design of the All-In-Two system. I agree they are a bigger investment, but they are very versatile!

Currently, I am using these two brands of All In Twos:

GROVIA (formerly known as GroBaby)

Actually, I’ve tried GroBaby (and still awaiting my GroVias – coming soon! ). This was the brand that made me love AI2s! The GroBaby shell set costs a whopping RM95 (comes with a shell, a soaker and a booster) but it was well worth it! You can also use it as a Hybrid system, purchase some disposable inserts and it’s easier to use when out and about. The prints are cute, its design is tip top and it’s also one-sized (although it has quite a small cutting). It may not be so easy to buy GroBaby’s now because soon all the shops will be selling GROVIAs instead (slightly different design but still the same features), but if you manage to buy them preloved/second hand, you should! (Psst… there are some listed on Diapers Asia forum, see for yourself )

ITTI BITTI D’LISH SNAP IN ONE (SIO)

I understand why this Australian brand of AI2s are so popular. These cloth diapers are simply the cutest ever, check out the gorgeous rainbow colours and limited edition prints, and Minkee fabric outer too! It has a very unique design too which I liked, the soaker and booster can both be snapped off (Snap In One ) for easy washing and drying, and also for you to reuse the cover. It is SIZED diapers, and the design makes it fit really snugly and it is super duper trim. My husband loves this, saying that they are not bulky and looks comfortable for the baby to move around in. There are also some Moms who are selling these preloved – they’re very popular, just visit the Diapers Asia forums and look for them (I bought all 3 of mine there too )
