I’m using the new rating system for product reviews for JOLI diapers. Each category/factor below have a score from 1 to 5 (1 being the worst, and 5 being the best). Comments follow each category.

Design & Appearance – My Score: 3 out of 5

Personally, I feel the design is pretty simple. This is largely due to the fact that it’s plain and not printed (I think I *might* have seen too many printed cloth diapers). They have 11 colours to choose from though, so I bet you’ll find your favourite
First hand view, it has a wide cutting, and also 4 size snap settings which can be perfect to fit babies of all sizes.
And of course, the SIDE SNAPS! This is the first time I’ve tried side snapping diapers, so we’ll see how they work.

The side snaps need some getting used to, but with some practice, it’s not really so difficult!

Ease of Use – My Score: 3.5 out of 5

The biggest challenge for me is to get used to the side snaps. I had some difficulties in the beginning to put them on, and to try to get the perfect fit on the waist and thighs. With an active baby and fumbling on the new system, a little bit tricky!
Here’s my tip, for successfully putting on side snapping diapers (after some practice and using several other cloth diapers with side snaps): Always put on BOTH snaps on the waist – which are the first snaps located on the top, left and right, FIRST. This is to get the best fit for the waist. Only after that, fasten the other 2 snaps on the bottom to get the right fit for the thighs. I feel this is the correct way to do it. Try it!
I sometimes fold the insert to the front (the Large size is too long, or if I need extra absorbency on the front for my boy), I find it a little bit difficult to stuff the pocket with the folded insert. The pocket opening at the crotch area is quite narrow for some reason.
No other issues with use and washing, it’s pretty simple because of the easy to clean microfleece inner.

This Knickernappies diaper comes with 2 LoopyDo (microfiber-hemp) inserts of two sizes – Large & Small.

Functionality & Performance - My Score: 4.75 out of 5!

I simply LOVE the performance of this diaper! The secret, is of course in the inserts, LoopyDo – I understand why it’s highly rated everywhere.
The LoopyDo insert is made of 2 layers microfiber on the top layer and 2 layers hemp in the inner layer. Hemp is well-known for its super water retention properties, while microfiber is great at absorbing liquid. This combo is really great, performance wise! I love using the inserts for nap time, and also during the night (layered with another bamboo/microfiber insert).
The LoopyDo inserts also is smartly designed in a “loop” so the will dry faster, and this is also one super cool feature.
Being a One-size diaper with snap rise settings, it could get quite bulky at the front for smaller babies needing more “snapping down” of the buttons. This was the case for my baby (Hubby couldn’t help noticing – he’s not a fan of bulky diapers). It helps to wear the Small size insert if your baby is smaller, instead of stuffing a folded down Large insert.
This pocket diaper is more of a “high cut” cloth diaper. It sits on the belly, very near the belly button. I’m thinking, as my baby grows and it gets less bulky, I will appreciate the side snapping function more because it will give a smooth front, and will not bulk up like front snapping diapers. This will be great for tummy sleeper babies.

Generous sizing – My 1 year old weighing 10+kg is only on the second snap rise setting.

This will last him QUITE some time I think (a plus!!)…

Quality - My Score: 4 out of 5

I have used these diapers for around 3 months and it is still looking great - no sign of wear and tear for the inserts and cover. Quite hardy!
There are some minor workmanship issues on the cover, but this can also be the case for any brand of manufactured diaper.

OVERALL RATING - My Score: 4 out of 5

PROS: Excellent performance for the inserts (great for naps, night use and longger hours); Fast drying inserts (”loop” design); Good quality materials; Easy to maintain; Generous sizing with 4 snap settings – good to use up til potty training (or even *for* potty training because they’re easy to take off).
CONS: Side snapping might require some practice and getting used to if you’re a beginner; No prints; Can be a bit costly for purchase; Might be bulky for smaller babies.

A little bit bulky at the front for now, but I know they’ll last!

(By the way, I folded the Large size insert in this picture so it does get bulkier)

Overall, Knickernappies One Size Pocket Diaper are a superior quality and high performance diaper (especially for its inserts!). They might be a little bit costly, but having a few pieces in you stash will be great for long hour use and night/nap time, and with the generous sizing, they will also last until baby potty trains! (I think with some pretty prints, it will sway more to give it a GO! )

Cloth Diaper Malaysia: Hello Wannie! It’s a pleasure to have you here for a chat. Can you tell us a little bit about you, your family (your little hero too!) and finally about your business, My Cheeky Boo?

Wannie: Hi there! About me, I’m a 22 years old, and working full time in a travel agency in Kota Kinabalu. As some may know, I’m a Chinese and a converted Muslim, so you can call me by Bonnie or Wannie. I’m a mommy to my naughty cutie pie – Watari who is 43 months now, and a loving wife to my husband – Wirah.

My business – My Cheeky Boo, is an unexpected gift that I never thought I would ever have today. My Cheeky Boo was officially launched on 12th May 2009, and it started because of my passion of cloth diapering my son. I was exposed to modern cloth diapers 3 years back and it totally changed my motherhood journey – it and made me aware of the things I can do for a greener planet. My Cheeky Boo is like a child of mine, while I worked hard to make it grow, it also gives me the experience and knowledge that I can use to help others. Not to mention the great friends I found along the way.

Cloth Diaper Malaysia: How is the experience of managing your own business and also taking care of your family? What is your advice for other mothers/wives who might want to start a business?

Wannie: It is definitely challenging because it’s not easy when you’re a wife and also a mother. Not trying to complain, but with a lil one around, chores to be done at home seems never-ending. Apart from cooking, laundry, cleaning, now I have more tasks to do for the business, like inventory checking, email replying, orders packing etc. Add to that, I’m also working full time, so it’s like 2 or 3 times the things that you need to do in a day compared to before. I always wished I could have 48 hours a day now, so I could get good sleep every night, haha! But because I love my family, I’m passionate about what I’m doing with My Cheeky Boo, and also enjoy my full time job at the travel agency, I know I will be able to manage all tasks (at least I keep trying).

My advice for mothers /wives who would like to start their own business is to ensure the business that you want to run/venture is something you absolutley love, something you are passionate about, something you won’t get bored of, and something that would keep you motivated all the time. That’s the key to stay strong with your business and for its success. Without these, it will be difficult for the business to sustain long term. Of course, you must also have faith in HIM, and have support from close ones and family

Cloth Diaper Malaysia: Can you let us know about the products you have on My Cheeky Boo? How did you choose which brands/products to sell in your store?

Wannie: My main goal is to promote cloth diapers through My Cheeky Boo, so of course you can find a lot of cloth diapers and cloth diapering accessories here. We also offer products for mommies and little ones, such as cloth menstrual pads, ring slings, breastfeeding products, natural soaps, kids apparel and accessories. I try to offer a wide range of products for parents to shop, so it would be a conveinet shopping experience for them as they can look for many things in one place.

Most products/brands that I sell have been tested or used by myself or my son before I decided to bring them in. This is to make me understand the products better, for it to be more convincing when I promote them, and also better assist customers and their enquiries on the products. I also make sure the products that we offer is of high quality, functional and as affordable as possible.

For some products that I don’t personally try out, I do a lot of research on them, read up a lot of reviews from other users, and do survey to see if the products are good, well recommended and if there is a demand for it. You would want to have something that is able to sell in your store in order profits.

Cloth Diaper Malaysia: Now let’s talk about Cloth Diapers Can you tell us what brands of Cloth Diapers that is carried on My Cheeky Boo. From those, which are your favourites and why?

Wannie: At My Cheeky Boo, you can find Cloth Diaper brands like Autumnz, Baby Beehinds, BambooLite, Bottombumpers, Cushie Tushies, Fuzzi Bunz, Happy Heiny’s, Knickernappies, Moo Moo Kow, Rumparooz and Rocky Mountain Diapers.

Hmm, my favourite? That’s a tough question for a cloth diaper addict mommy like me, haha! Honestly, I love every single one of them because many were in my son’s stash before. If I really had to choose, the top favourites are Baby Beehinds, Cushies Tushies, Knickernappies and Rocky Mountain Diapers.

I like Baby Beehinds because they offer the full range of cloth diaper system from Pocket Diaper, AlO, AI2, Fitted and Cover. They are one of the best diaper brand I’ve come across. Although they are produced in China, rest assured the cloth diaper quality is superb, and what I love most is their signature lovely minky colours, pretty! Do you know that the limited edition print is on their way to our store? *wink*

As for Cushie Tushies, it was one of my favourites in my early cloth diapering experience. I was totally blown away with their gorgeous minky prints. My son always attracted a lot of attention when he is wearing his Cushie Tushies diaper. And not just that, I love the fact that Cushie Tushies is one of the fastest drying AlO that I ever had, and not to mention they’re absorbent too.

Knickernappies are great too because they’re the only one size diaper that still fits my 47 month toddler. He still wears them at night and doesn’t complain that they’re too tight! The sizing for Knickernappies one size diaper is really generous and can fit up to 40lbs! And their overnight insert - SuperDo is fantastic for heavy wetter baby like mine.

I also adore Rocky Mountain Diapers because it is the first diaper I came across with the internal leg adjustments, with 4 snaps on each sidewhich allows you to adjust from size XS, S, M and L. The size adjustments fit my son really well. It’s like a glove on his bum, never too tight or too loose. And the sweet pastel colours combo is unique and would suit both boys and girls!

Cloth Diaper Malaysia: What brand would you recommend for: Newbies; Those with a tight budget; Heavywetter babies & To use for night time?

Wannie: For newbies with a tight budget, I will recommend to use one size Pocket Diapers which more economic in the long run. And for that, I would choose Autumnz cloth diaper. It’s an affordable one size cloth diaper available on My Cheeky Boo. Don’t think that because it’s cheap, it’s not good however. With proper use and care, they can last for years like other cloth diapers as well. It will definitely help you to save your money compared to using disposable diapers.

For heavy wetter babies and overnight use, it depends which system the parents prefer. Some prefer to use Fitted Diapers because it’s breathable and able to absorb well, while others prefer using Pocket diapers because they don’t like that the entire fitted diaper will get soaking wet.

If you prefer pocket diapers, any pocket diaper brand is fine to be use. However, you have to use suitable inserts to use for a leak free system. For that, I recommend Knickernappies’ SuperDo insert. They are rated the #1 inserts on diaperpin.com. They work amazing for heavy wetters and it’s trimmer than if you combine hemp and microfiber insert together, for example. Also, the Knickernappies insert is prewashed, so you can use them right away – saves you the work of prewashing before use!

Fitted diapers are also a good option, especially if you have a super heavy wetter baby. You must try out the Baby Beehinds Night Nappy, it is designed for use on heavy wetters and for long night hour use. The absorbency is incredible, it can achieve up to 23 layers of bamboo fleece in the wet zone! And with the absorbency it offers, the retail price which is only Rm92 is considered still very economical. Do note however that this diaper is not waterproof, so you must use a diaper cover for a leak proof system.

Cloth Diaper Malaysia: I heard that you will be launching your retail store in Kota Kinabalu soon, congratulations!!! Can you tell us more about this?

Wannie: Oh yes, thank you!! It wasn’t an easy decision. I’ve thought about it a thousand times before I finally decided to go for it. From the very beginning, I’ve always dreamt about opening up a retail shop that will specializing in cloth diapers, whereby the main goal is to encourage more parents to use cloth diapers. Although online store is easier to manage and will get some exposure to the public, somehow I realise that there is still people who don’t use the internet, and who don’t shop online too. In order to increase the awareness for cloth diapers to more people, I figured out that a retail shop is the best way to do so.

Also, I have received calls and emails from those that are interested with cloth diapers, and they would ask if I have a shop somewhere so that they can see, touch and learn more about them in real life. When I told them I only sell online, they sound disappointed as some of them do not use Internet or have difficulties to go online. I try to arrange a meet up with them on weekdays after work or weekends, but it’s not really practical method.

The reason I decide to open up the shop in Kota Kinabalu (KK) is apart from it being the capital of Sabah, it has a lot of potential for developing the natural/green lifestyle market. Since 3 years ago till today, the demand and awareness of natural lifestyle here at KK had changed tremendously. Previously, very few people know about cloth diapers, very few women would use cloth pads and many families don’t bother to use recycle bags because of lack of awareness. Now, you can see many people using reusable bags when shopping in the supermarket, and I’m also surprised to find that more and more of My Cheeky Boo’s customers are from Sabah, and no longer just from West Malaysia. This is a great sign, showing that the green lifestyle market growing positively, and Sabahans are more aware of what they can do to help the planet, to lead a green lifestyle, and in the long run to provide a better future for our young ones.
