1) JOLI BAMBOO POCKET DIAPER

ABOUT:

• Has a luxurious bamboo inner (almost 100% bamboo composition), and comes with a 4 layered insert (2 layers bamboo fabrics and 2 layers of microfibers).
• Tested to last from at least 2 hours to up to 12 hours (subject to the volume of liquid).
• It has an additional snap feature on the insert and pocket cover to prevent shifting of the insert.
• Has 3 x 3 snaps design with 4 size adjustments to best fit your baby : Newborn, Small, Medium & Large.
• Multiple snaps and cross-over snaps design for waist and higher rise adjustment allows for better fit.
• Elasticized leg construction to help contain messes.
• Available in cheerful solid colors & also exciting prints.

I’m using the new rating system for product reviews for JOLI diapers. Each category/factor below have a score from 1 to 5 (1 being the worst, and 5 being the best). Comments follow each category.

Design & Appearance – My Score: 3 out of 5

• Has a soft-to-touch bamboo bamboo inner, design is pretty simple, but the cover looks cute with the baby blue coloured snaps on white. I’m not a big fan of their prints, but that’s just me.
• Has a wide and generous cutting that might be able to fit many babies until potty training.
• I like that it has the snap on the cover to keep the insert in place.

Ease of Use – My Score: 3 out of 5

• They only come in Snap closures, which can be difficult for beginners or caregivers to use. There are also 3 snaps to put on during diaper changes, which might be  a challenge to get a good fitting for wriggly babies.
  
• The bamboo inner might be a little bit difficult to clean (if your baby poops on it), because the inner “clings” to the solid matter. Might require a strong spray of water to remove poop. To solve messy clean-ups, line diaper with a washable liner or disposable nappy liner.
  
• This being said, it is great because the poop “will stay in place” on the inner instead of “dropping off” on the sides or back of the diaper
  

Functionality & Performance - My Score: 4 out of 5

• It is quite trim as a one-size diaper, and the insert doesn’t bulk up or move around.
• I’ve always loved bamboo inserts for its good absorbency, and this also helps make JOLI a trim diaper.
• The insert really does retain liquids well (I’ve used it for 4 hours with no leaks), and I like using this diaper for daytime naps for baby’s comfort.
• With the snap closures, it might be a little difficult to get the right fitting on your baby. Sometimes I find myself readjusting the snaps after I put it on baby. If not snapped on well, there might be a gap on the wings on the sides like its not a good fit.
• It is not really a “stay dry” diaper because the bamboo inner does not wick the fabric well enough to keep baby dry. If you want to have stay-dry qualities, line with a washable fleece liner (this also makes messy poop clean ups easier).

Quality - My Score: 3.5 out of 5

• I have used JOLI diapers for 2 months and it is still looking great (no tears, stains, etc).
• However, bamboo fabrics are known to be more sensitive to wear and tear and might not be as durable as synthetic fabric like microfiber or polyester. I do not know the long-term quality of the bamboo fabrics used for theses diapers.

Value for Money - My Score: 4 out of 5

• JOLI pocket diapers is priced at RM53 or 57 each (different prices for plain and printed). For a good performance bamboo pocket diaper which is generous in sizing, I score this quite highly. If you would like a pocket diaper for nap times and heavy wetters, this might be a good choice to consider.

OVERALL RATING - My Score: 4 out of 5

• PROS: Trim one-size pocket diaper, Good performance bamboo+microfiber inset, Bright and colourful choices for plain and printed designs, Wide and generous diaper cutting.
• CONS: Prone to wear and tear issues for bamboo fabric, Only available in snap closures (might be difficult to get the right fit), Not completely “stay dry”.

2) JOLI RAINBOW MULTIFIT FITTED DIAPER

ABOUT:

• Has one-size snap adjustments that can fit average baby of 8 weeks until toddler (4-16 kg).
• The outer cover is bamboo velour which is laminated with PUL (which also makes it waterproof, and no additional cover is needed!), while inner lining is bamboo fleece + organic cotton.
• Has an attached soaker made from bamboo fleece + organic cotton, and also comes with 1 additional snap on bamboo soaker (choose either an Ordinary -short-; or Multiple folds -long- soaker).
• Ability to tailor the absorbency according to baby’s need by folding the soakers at baby’s wet zone.
• Use with the soakers can provide a minimum of 7 layers, and up until 16 layers of bamboo absorbency!
• Has a high percentage of natural fibers to ensure only natural fibers touches baby’s skin.
• Value for money – soakers are provided, no extra covers are required, and the system is multi-fitting!

Design & Appearance – My Score: 4.5 out of 5

• It’s easy to choose which colour to buy because there are only 2 available, hehe! I really liked the “Orangety” colour that I have because it looks good enough to eat! (I’d give a 5/5 score if there are prints )
• The best part is of course the velvety bamboo velour outer which is so nice to the touch. Also, I am in love with the ruffles on the legs and also around the waist, and also the rainbow-coloured serging on the outside. Simply too cute!!
• Most fitted diapers are sized, so the fact that this is One-sized, it’s really value for money!
• After assembling the soakers (plus the snap on Multiple folds soaker), it looks quite BULKY.

Ease of Use – My Score: 4.5 out of 5

• Before using, just snap on the additional soaker on the cover, and adjust the length by folding soakers according to size of the diaper, and consider also your baby’s “wet zone” - For boys, fold soakers to have more layers on the front, and for girls concentrate more layers in the middle. The same can be said for back or tummy sleepers.
• Although they use snap closures, they are quite simple to put on. It’s a “wrap style” diaper, so it is not difficult to get the right fitting.
• Also, most fitted diapers are not waterproof and requires the use of a diaper cover, fleece soaker or wool cover on top to ensure no leaks or dampness. JOLI MultiFits diaper does not require a cover because of the laminated PUL on the outer cover. It makes using fitted diapers so much easier by skipping a step!

Functionality & Performance - My Score: 4 out of 5

• As with any One-size fitted diaper, it tends to be bulky with all the soakers and layers inside. This might not be so great to be used on smaller babies.
• Also, since there are many layers in the soakers, drying times are longer. However, the design of JOLI Multifits allows the layers to opened up to speed up drying process.
• Bamboo material again comes out tops for its absorbency power. This fitted diaper is EXCELLENT for use for night time and extended hours.
• The unique PUL laminated outer cover makes the fitted diaper waterproof, and this is such an interesting and useful feature for a fitted diaper. The diaper is not damp on the outside, even if the diaper is wet on the inside layers!

Quality - My Score: 3.5 out of 5

• I think the workmanship and sewing is of good quality.
• As with JOLI bamboo pocket diapers above, my main concern is about the wear and tear, and durability of the bamboo fabric.

Value for Money - My Score: 5 out of 5

• I feel that JOLI MultiFits is affordably priced at RM60 or 66 each (depending if you take the Ordinary or Multiple folds soaker). As above, for the absorbency power of bamboo fabric, and also for the fact that it is a One-size fitted diaper, this is certainly value for money.
• This can be a great choice for those who would like to try out using a the Fitted diaper type of cloth diaper because it is priced cheaper than many other fitted diaper brands in the market.

OVERALL RATING - My Score: 4.5 out of 5

• PROS: Affordable price and economical (One-sized), Excellent absorbency for night time and extended hour use, Easy to use, Does not require a diaper cover on top, Cute design and colours (the frills, rainbow serging and yummy colours!)
• CONS: Prone to wear and tear issues for bamboo fabric, Takes quite a while to dry, Might be bulky for smaller babies.

• CONS: Only available in 1 size, Wetbag thickness and serging at the edges not up to my standards (I prefer my wetbags to have double layer linings and strong sewing on the edges to really contain the odors).

When BambooLite was the Featured Shop in June on Cloth Diaper Malaysia, the company was also very kind to allow me (oops… I mean, my baby) to experience BambooLite’s CM-TrueFit Diapers. After nearly 2 months of usage, here is my review to share with Cloth Diaper Malaysia’s readers.

Let’s Recap on BambooLite CM-TrueFit Diapers:

• The diapers offer 2 unique types of Cloth Diapers, “CM-TrueFit PUL” (Pocket Diapers) and “CM-TrueFit Fitted” (Fitted Diapers).
• They are one-sized “Truly Adjustable” diaper which can fit babies small or large!
• BambooLite diapers are made from Bamboo fabric which is well known to be suitable for baby’s sensitive skin, has anti-bacterial properties, highly absorbent, and is super soft and comfortable.
• They are made from bamboo yarn that meets Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 requirements (an international testing and certification system for textiles).

For reviewing purposes, I had received from BambooLite:

1. CM-TrueFite PUL Lite in Black (Velcro) - the Pocket Diaper comes with a Hybrid insert
2. CM-TrueFit Fitted Premium in Red (Snaps) – the Fitted Diaper comes with a Foldover insert & bamboo booster

Apparently, with just these 2 types of BambooLite diapers, I could try out ALL the combinations of diapers that they offer. How so?? This is because the inserts are interchangeable between the two, enabling you to try out each one and decide which combo is most suitable for your baby. I couldn’t wait to try them out!

MY FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

• Packaging had clear wash and care instructions. A very important feature.
• The bamboo velour fabric on the inner lining of the diapers were oh-so-super velvety soft to feel and touch!
• The solid colour of the CM-TrueFit PUL looks attractively bold, while the CM-TrueFit Fitted has a luxurious velvety shine to it (because the entire cover is made from bamboo velour).
• The “covers” of these 2 types diapers look very similar in design, only that the CM-TrueFit PUL is waterproof, while the CM-TrueFit Fitted is not.
  
• I couldn’t understand its concept of “Truly Adjustable” that it claims to be, because initially I couldn’t see how/where exactly you’re actually SUPPOSED to adjust them (No instructions on packaging).

MY USAGE:

Upon receival, I prewashed the diapers 3 times to have better absorbency (it is recommended that 6 washes be done to achieve full absorbency). I machine wash the diapers every 2-3 days using Pureen HAD detergent, and line dry. The diapers were used on my then 3 1/2 month old baby. I have managed to use them for around 2 months.

HOW TO USE THE BAMBOOLITE DIAPERS:

1) Adjusting The Thigh Elastics

After checking out BambooLite’s website, only then did I discover how to adjust the sizing of the diapers. You were were supposed to adjust the “bra strap looking” elastic straps at the thighs, and these were totally hidden under the pocket opening (refer picture above) - No wonder I couldn’t figure out where to find them! CM-TrueFit diapers has this unique feature so you can really customize its setting (unlimited too) so it can fit your baby as he grows, hence the concept “Truly Adjustable”!

Honestly, it was my first time using such a system of adjustment for cloth diapers. I was excited about the design, however I did have trouble using the adjustable elastic straps the first time. I think it took me 10 minutes or so to get the ideal thigh setting on my baby. However, you only have to do so once. You don’t have to adjust it until the next time when your baby grows bigger, and when the elastics need readjustments.

2) CM-TrueFit PUL: Stuffing The Pockets

• Easy to use if you are already used to using Pocket Diapers – Simply stuff the insert into the pocket opening and secure it on the cover with the snap.

3) CM-TrueFit Fitted Premium: “Assembling” the Diaper

• The Fitted Premium has 3 components: A non-waterproof bamboo velour cover (also with a pocket opening), a Foldover insert and a bamboo booster.
• First, lift the cover’s pocket opening to snap on the Foldover insert on the cover, fold the insert in half with the bamboo velour side facing up, then lay in the bamboo booster on top.
• If you have a small baby (like mine), the Foldover insert might be too long to be folded in half. In my case, I folded it in a little bit more at the front to make it shorter. *Bonus: This method also adds extra absorbency at the front for tummy sleepers or baby boys! *
• Once you get used to assembling the Fitted, you can experiment by folding the insert any other way that you think is suitable for your baby’s needs. (Eg: Fold to increase the absorbency at the back/front)

THE FITTING & FUNCTION:

CM-TrueFit PUL (Pocket Diapers)

Oooh… I just love the boldness of the colour black. So classic!

• Fitting: I consider them to be trim, and they hug the crotch snugly to enable better movement. The velcro closure makes it very easy to get the right fit on baby. Indeed, no red marks on baby’s thighs due to the adjustable elastics!
  
• Absorbency: I was really amazed at the performance of this diaper. No leaks (pee) even after 3 hours, and I’m very confident of wearing this diaper for longer hours when going out too. Suitable for my little heavy wetter!
  
• Velcro Closure: It is really strong, and designed so that it will not rub on baby’s skin, and it didn’t! Also, since it’s velcro type, it’s super easy to put on baby.

CM-TrueFit Fitted (Fitted Diapers)

I absolutely loved the super soft bamboo velour outer!

• Fitting: These diapers were BULKY – at the crotch area, and bulks up at the front too since I folded it more towards the front. It’s quite difficult for baby to move around freely, and to put his legs together. Also, there is wing droop because when I fasten it at the small settings, it left some gaping at the thigh area. Due to this, I only reserve these diapers for night time use (less movements).
  
• Absorbency: Performance wise, I give this diaper a thumbs up! I use this for night time diapering with a cover and there are certainly no leaks all throughout the night (10 hours). It can be used without the cover during the day, beause it will take quite a while for it to be soaking wet. Superb!
  
• Snap Closure: There is only 1 row of snaps, so getting the perfect fit is slightly more difficult compared to Velcro type. Also, the wing droop happens for smaller babies because lack of snaps to secure above the thigh.

WHAT I LIKE:

• I’m very pleased with the absorbency performance. Could it be the inserts? Or the bamboo velour? I do not know, but whatever it is,it’s working really well!
• The PUL type is really good for outings because they are quite trim and suitable to be worn under pants.
• The Fitted can be an excellent choice for night time diapering, and its absorbency can be customizable.
• The velcro closure is strong, yet designed to be non-irritating to baby’s skin and gives a good fit on baby.
• Super duper soft and velvety bamboo velour material!
• Has a wide range of attractive solid colours to choose from.
• I can recommend this brand to beginners because it is really value for their money.

The CM-TrueFit Fitted Premium is quite a bulky diaper. Of course, because it had 14 layers altogether (maybe more) when folded (correct me if I’m wrong, Jack)

FEEDBACK & SUGGESTIONS:

• To design the inserts (especially Foldover insert) so it will dry faster, and also to reduce detergent build up/mold growth in the layers.
• The Fitted type is quite bulky around the crotch, especially on smaller babies.
• I wonder if the adjustable leg elastics can last a long time if we keep adjusting them? (Eg: if we use on 2 babies of different sizes at one time).
• Provide usage instructions on packaging, expecially on how to adjust the thigh elastics.
• For snap closures, to figure out a solution for wing droop problem on smaller babies.
• The adjustable leg elastics design is very useful, however the adjusting and readjusting requires some amount of practice.

Overall, I am quite pleased with BambooLite’s diapers – proudly a Malaysian brand too! Good job to BambooLite’s team, and thank you so much for allowing me to review your products. I hope there will be many more Malaysian brands of cloth diapers available in the market for us to choose from

There are several types of cloth diapers in the market today, which are:

1. Prefold Diapers

Most basic cloth diaper any mother should have

• A rectangle piece of diaper with 3 sections, folded to fit the baby
• Does not have a waterproof layer outside
• Worn with diaper pins or Snappis.
• Has  thicker  layer in the centre (which is absorbent), and sides/outside layer (for folding)
• The cheapest among other cloth diapers
• Very versatile, durable useful: Can be used on its own, stuffed into pockets or worn with diaper covers
• Can also be used as wipe/burp cloths, baby covers, etc
• Two types: Bleached (white) and Unbleached (cream color -requires extra preparation before using)

2. Fitted Diapers

These type of diapers fit snugly on your baby

• Worn fitted and snug on babies (with elastic, Velcro, snaps or hooks)
• Not waterproof: Requires a diaper cover to ensure pee/poop do not leak!
• Can be made from: knits, flannel, teryy cloth, hemp, bamboo, fleece –any material, can even be made from an old t-shirt!

3. Pocket Diapers

Pockets, to me, are the best cloth diaper innovation!

• Outer layer is waterproof.
• The inner layer has “pockets” in the middle where you can insert the absorbent material called “inserts”.
• Different inner layer materials (microfleece, suede, velour, minky, etc) will feel different on the baby when it’s wet.
• Inserts are removed after baby pees/poops, which enables more effective cleaning.
• Customizable: Different types and amounts of inserts can be stuffed according to level of desired absorbency

4. All In Ones/All In Twos (AIOs/AI2s)

The closest thing to disposable diapers

• Most convenient, no accessories/preparation needed before use
• Waterproof, no covers needed.
• Absorbent material sewn into AIOs, no inserts needed.
• Because inside soakers are non-removable, requires longer drying time.
• AI2s can have an external soaker on the inside: allows customization and faster drying.
