I’m using the new rating system for product reviews for JOLI diapers. Each category/factor below have a score from 1 to 5 (1 being the worst, and 5 being the best). Comments follow each category.

Design & Appearance – My Score: 3 out of 5

• Personally, I feel the design is pretty simple. This is largely due to the fact that it’s plain and not printed (I think I *might* have seen too many printed cloth diapers). They have 11 colours to choose from though, so I bet you’ll find your favourite
• First hand view, it has a wide cutting, and also 4 size snap settings which can be perfect to fit babies of all sizes.
• And of course, the SIDE SNAPS! This is the first time I’ve tried side snapping diapers, so we’ll see how they work.

The side snaps need some getting used to, but with some practice, it’s not really so difficult!

Ease of Use – My Score: 3.5 out of 5

• The biggest challenge for me is to get used to the side snaps. I had some difficulties in the beginning to put them on, and to try to get the perfect fit on the waist and thighs. With an active baby and fumbling on the new system, a little bit tricky!
• Here’s my tip, for successfully putting on side snapping diapers (after some practice and using several other cloth diapers with side snaps): Always put on BOTH snaps on the waist – which are the first snaps located on the top, left and right, FIRST. This is to get the best fit for the waist. Only after that, fasten the other 2 snaps on the bottom to get the right fit for the thighs. I feel this is the correct way to do it. Try it!
• I sometimes fold the insert to the front (the Large size is too long, or if I need extra absorbency on the front for my boy), I find it a little bit difficult to stuff the pocket with the folded insert. The pocket opening at the crotch area is quite narrow for some reason.
• No other issues with use and washing, it’s pretty simple because of the easy to clean microfleece inner.

This Knickernappies diaper comes with 2 LoopyDo (microfiber-hemp) inserts of two sizes – Large & Small.

Functionality & Performance - My Score: 4.75 out of 5!

• I simply LOVE the performance of this diaper! The secret, is of course in the inserts, LoopyDo – I understand why it’s highly rated everywhere.
• The LoopyDo insert is made of 2 layers microfiber on the top layer and 2 layers hemp in the inner layer. Hemp is well-known for its super water retention properties, while microfiber is great at absorbing liquid. This combo is really great, performance wise! I love using the inserts for nap time, and also during the night (layered with another bamboo/microfiber insert).
• The LoopyDo inserts also is smartly designed in a “loop” so the will dry faster, and this is also one super cool feature.
• Being a One-size diaper with snap rise settings, it could get quite bulky at the front for smaller babies needing more “snapping down” of the buttons. This was the case for my baby (Hubby couldn’t help noticing – he’s not a fan of bulky diapers). It helps to wear the Small size insert if your baby is smaller, instead of stuffing a folded down Large insert.
• This pocket diaper is more of a “high cut” cloth diaper. It sits on the belly, very near the belly button. I’m thinking, as my baby grows and it gets less bulky, I will appreciate the side snapping function more because it will give a smooth front, and will not bulk up like front snapping diapers. This will be great for tummy sleeper babies.

Generous sizing – My 1 year old weighing 10+kg is only on the second snap rise setting.

This will last him QUITE some time I think (a plus!!)…

Quality - My Score: 4 out of 5

• I have used these diapers for around 3 months and it is still looking great - no sign of wear and tear for the inserts and cover. Quite hardy!
• There are some minor workmanship issues on the cover, but this can also be the case for any brand of manufactured diaper.

OVERALL RATING - My Score: 4 out of 5

• PROS: Excellent performance for the inserts (great for naps, night use and longger hours); Fast drying inserts (”loop” design); Good quality materials; Easy to maintain; Generous sizing with 4 snap settings – good to use up til potty training (or even *for* potty training because they’re easy to take off).
• CONS: Side snapping might require some practice and getting used to if you’re a beginner; No prints; Can be a bit costly for purchase; Might be bulky for smaller babies.

A little bit bulky at the front for now, but I know they’ll last!

(By the way, I folded the Large size insert in this picture so it does get bulkier)

Overall, Knickernappies One Size Pocket Diaper are a superior quality and high performance diaper (especially for its inserts!). They might be a little bit costly, but having a few pieces in you stash will be great for long hour use and night/nap time, and with the generous sizing, they will also last until baby potty trains! (I think with some pretty prints, it will sway more to give it a GO! )

Angel Mel Collections Designer Wetbags: Functional, cute & versatile!

Remember the previous mom & baby products I reviewed from Baby-Mel.com’s exclusive line, Angel Mel Collections? Just to refresh you, they were the Hot Mama Nursing Pads, Cuddly Buddies and Organic Bamboo Wipes. This time around, I will be reviewing another product from them,the Angel Mel Collections Designer Wetbags.

USAGE:

With 3 different sizes of Designer Wetbags in hand, the possibilities for use are endless! What I love most is that these Wetbags are just so versatile, you can use it for almost anything. I brought all 3 during my travels to Europe!

Large Wetbag

• I hanged this on the door to stuff my baby’s dirty cloth diapers (rinsed – if I can manage to do so). It can hold around 1 day’s worth of diapers, sometimes 2 (if I use more All-In-Twos -with  just the inserts). A little bit stuffed though if I use it for more than 1 day.
• Since I was staying at my in-laws place, it makes using cloth diapers a pleasant affair for everyone. I don’t need to use a bulky pail to store dirty diapers in their house, and the wetbag is a very good way to keep away any stink!
• The hook handle is really strong and sturdy, considering I hang 1-2 days worth of dirty  diapers in them!
• The “large” size is not as large as I would like it to be. I’d love if it could function as a large Wetbag that can also function as an all-day Wetbag (to stuff more than 1 day’s worth of dirty cloth diapers, and perhaps to store a few pairs of wet clothes/swimsuits – baby’s or mine).
• This Owl print design is my favourite print ever!

Medium Wetbag

• The size is similar to that of a clutch handbag (and with the loop handle, you might use it as a fashionable clutch if you choose a suitable design!)
• It’s the perfect size as my baby’s “Diaper change essentials/emergency bag” which I always bring with me if I go out with baby. What do I fit inside it? 1 clean cloth diaper, 1 pack travel wet wipes, 1 travel changing mat, 1 tube diaper change cream. I know everything I need will be in this bag, and its very easy to spot too! (I’ll always mention to husband: “Give me some wet wipes from the ICE CREAM BAG right now please, I have a baby poop emergency!!”)
• If using to store cloth diapers, I managed to fit in 2 pieces inside.
• It is a good size to be used as a travel toilettries bag too. (You will know they will keep any leaks in them and not in your suitcase…)
  

Mama Wonder Wetbag

• This small sized wetbag comes with 2 zippered compartments, and is meant to be used for storing women’s cloth pads/liners (1 compartment for dirty ones, the other for clean ones).
• For my travels, I used it as my baby’s medicine bag, storing all of baby’s essentials like medicine, nasal aspirator, hand sanitizer, dropper, etc. Again, if anything breaks/leaks, you know it will not stain or dirty other things in your suitcase because it is in a wetbag!
• I think this size will be good for a compact toilettries/make up bag too.

In Conclusion…

1. These Designer Wetbags are very versatile and useful for countless ways. Apart from the uses I’ve shown above, you can also use them to store baby’s plate, bib and utensils after their meal, store wet beach toys, dirty clothes from the gym, storing baby’s dirty clothes/diapers from the babysitter or daycare, and many others. I bet you can find many ways to use them for yourself.
2. I love that the workmanship, design and material quality is of high standards. With these wetbags, you know you are investing in them to be used for a long, long time.
3. Let’s not forget about the choices of designer prints! You can really be spoilt for choice with the very fun, colourful and unique designs! No reason for you to store your things in a piece of PLASTIC BAG anymore, get these and increase your Mummy-style factor
4. After countless washings (I wash the wetbag along with the dirty diapers), the colours show no signs of fading, and the wetbag still retains its great functionality. Please ensure you wash it with cold water, and not to spin dry too often, or you might spoil the waterproof abilities.

As promised (after the previous review of Cuddly Buddies), here is my next review for Angel Mel Collections’ new product range: the Hot Mama Nursing Pads.

Before that, here’s a little bit about my Breastfeeding Journey so far:

1. I am exclusively breastfeeding my baby for 6 months plus now.
2. I pump early in the morning and right before going to bed to reduce engorgement, and also to have some expressed breast milk stock as back up to use when I’m not with baby.
3. I experience overactive let-down reflex (forceful spraying of milk during breasfeeding), and occasional leaks when I miss a breastfeeding session.
4. I have been a user of reusable/washable breast pads because I think disposable ones are uncomfortable.

WHY USE REUSABLE NURSING PADS?

These are some reasons why I think disposable nursing/breast pads are a waste, and maybe bad for your health too. These are also why I use them 100% now!

• Do you realize how expensive a box of disposable nursing pads are in the market? After calculation, they are around RM1 for just one piece!
  
• It is quite a waste for your money, and also for the environment, since you are only using nursing pads for a few hours before throwing them away.
• The plastic waterproof backing on the disposable nursing pads are NOT breathable! Just like using disposable pads, they give a feeling of sweatiness and stickiness after some time, ideal grounds for infections and irritations. Having natural materials against your skin, especially so your BREASTS, is healthier and more comfortable too.
  
• What are in those disposables? Again, nobody knows for sure. Apart from the synthetic materials like plastics and adhesives, what sort of “absorbent material” do they use inside to suck up the moisture? I’ve cut up a disposable breast pad before and found out that they were SYNTHETIC GELS (maybe Sodium Polyacrylate and Tribulytin (TBT)! Eew…

ABOUT HOT MAMA NURSING PADS:

• Made from: Organic bamboo velour (top layer), Organic hemp (inner core), 100% Merino wool (back layer) & 100% Flannel in designer prints (outer part).
• Natural & organic fabrics used are chemical free, anti-bacterial, breathable, helps minimize skin sores and irritations.

I received 1 pair Hot Mama Nursing Pads in Yellow Flowers (shown below) for reviewing.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

1. Obviously, the prints were the first thing that caught my eye. When I saw the other patterns available, I was already thinking whichI want next
2. Noticed that the nursing pads were not smooth in shape on the outside. It has a slightly pointed tip (like a mini version of Madonna’s outfit in the 80s, hehe)

USAGE

I used them during the day (around 4-5 hours), and all through the night (~10 hours). I  accidentally placed them in the washing machine for prewash, and after it come out, the fabric at the seams seems to frill a little bit. Oops!

WHAT I LIKE:

1. As I expected from an Angel Mel Collections product, the choice of designer prints are simply irresistable! It really makes you feel pretty and sexy (and only you’ll know it )
2. The previous type of nursing pads I have used were cellulose material (a bit rigid and unsoft), so to have soft bamboo velour against my skin is a very pleasant change. It definitely feels more comfortable.
3. It has pretty good absorbency probably due to Hemp material, and I don’t feel like I have to change the pads after each feeding session (even though I have overactive let-down problem).
4. It can last around 5 hours (or more, depending on milk supply) before it feels “wet”, so it’s quite suitable for outings too – for missed feeding sessions/engorgement/nursing in public.

TO BE CONSIDERED…

1. Personally, I prefer my nursing pads to be contoured so it would be smooth on the outside. Tnurse ihe pointed tip of these pads might make it visible over your bra and any tight clothing.
2. I considered them a little bulky due to the many layers. This makes drying time slightly longer compared to my other brands of reusable nursing pads.
3. I would prefer the nursing pads to be wider/large in size so it would sit nicely in the bra and wouldn’t shift around too much. This would also make it more comfortable, to have more bamboo velour  fabric against the , and for better coverage too
4. They’re a little too delicate to be washed in the washing machine, so you have to spend some time to hand wash them.
5. For those used to disposable nursing pads, these are NOT waterproof, so you might experience leaks if you wear them for extended hours (Mine was wet after I used it through the night – I had engorgement).

CONCLUSION:

I am a firm believer that reusable products are better than disposables. For those new to reusable nursing pads, yes, they are an investment in the beginning (just like cloth diapers), but you can really save a lot of money in the long run. And consider the health benefits too! Since they’re reusable, they might add up to your laundry, but have a good stash in hand so you can rotate their usage and have some spares too.

WHAT ARE CUDDLY BUDDIES??

• Cuddly Buddies are marketed as a multi-purpose baby product: as an over the shoulder cuddly Burp Towel, and also as a lovely Baby Bib (it has snaps at the back to attach around baby’s neck).
• It is made of 1 layer super-soft Certified Organic bamboo velour on one side, and either fluffy Minky fabric OR 100% cotton flannel fabric on the other: Minky & Bamboo or Flannel & Bamboo combo.
• Both the Minky and cotton flannel fabrics have fun and cheerful prints on them to choose from (the cotton flannel fabrics are imported designer prints).
• Handmade and Made in Malaysia. (In support of local products )

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

• Who isn’t a fan of Minky fabric right? Just like how I love Minky cloth diapers, I will love other Minky fabric baby products too. This product is just divine because it offers a really pretty Minky fabric print too!
• It’s pretty wide in length, and because of this I figured it can be used for many other purposes too.

HOW I USED THEM:

As mentioned above, I have managed to discover many ways to use Cuddly Buddies for my baby! Below are some pictures of Cuddly Buddies in action:

This was Cuddly Buddies’ first intended purpose: As a luxuriously fluffy Burp Towel. Especially handy if other people wants to cuddle with your baby, but you’re unsure about the “cleanliness” of their clothings – lay the Cuddly Buddies on them first before passing your baby to them! Problem solved

Second intended purpose: Attach the Cuddly Buddies around baby’s neck with the snaps and it becomes a funky Baby Bib. I just love that it’s large enough for this purpose (good for messy meals), and my baby looks like he’s wearing a really cool bolero outfit doesn’t he?

Creative purpose #3: A stroller head liner. I created a comfy head cocoon for my baby using it. Since it’s super soft to lay on, he looks so comfy during his stroller naps!

Creative purpose #4: Since I babywear my baby, and he LOVES to bite/nibble on the baby carrier (however much I tried to stop him), I used Cuddly Buddies to line the front side of my SSC (soft structured carrier). He can nibble on it all he wants now because I know it’s clean!

Creative purpose #5: Again as a babywearing accessory, I used it on my chest so he can lay on it instead of my (sometimes) sweaty/stinky body :p

And for Purpose #6: As a “smelly blanket“ to roll around, cuddle, play, nibble, chew on or play peek-a-boo with! He really loves the colourful patterns on them.

Purpose #7: I also managed to use Cuddly Buddies as an emergency lay-on mat, just lay his head on any unfamiliar or not-so-hygienic-surface, and you’ve got your a clean and comfy enough place to lie on. (Sorry, didn’t manage to take a picture of this)

WHAT I LIKE:

1. As you can very well observe from the pictures, I love Cuddly Buddies because it’s so useful in many ways! Can anyone help me add in other uses for it too?
2. I absolutely love the Minky and Bamboo fabric combination – super soft on BOTH sides!
3. Adore the print of this one very much, and I bet there are other drool-worthy choices too.

For those who are new to Cloth Diapering: Let me explain what are All-In-One (AIO) Cloth Diapers:

You just have to make do with the set snap settings available, and because of this the front of the Cloth Diaper might bunch up and bulk up in front. I recently converted to fully using Cloth Wipes during diaper changes. What I used were simply some baby washcloths that I bought in retail outlets. You know, those usual small face towel thingies?

Therefore, I was curious to also discover the other types of Cloth Wipes I can use for my baby. So I am very glad that I receive these Organic Bamboo Baby Wipes by Angel Mel Collections for reviewing. A Brief Review of the Organic Bamboo Baby Wipes:

• The item comes in a pack of 2 baby wipes, beautifully packed with ribbons - ideal for gifts too
  
• It’s double sided: 1 side printed 100% cotton flannel; and 1 side 100% Certified Organic Bamboo Velour
• Comes in 4 choices of prints: Plain, Gender Neutral, Boy and Girl prints (I received the Boy prints, picture below)
• Size: Approximately 9”x 8.5″

How I Used The Baby Wipes:

• 1 baby wipe is used for diaper changes, and 1 baby wipe is used for washing baby’s face and body
• Use is not limited for these two. I feel it can also be used for any other purpose: wiping messes, as a handkerchief, during mealtimes, etc

What I Like:

• The bamboo material is oh-so-super soft! I like to run the material over my own face after they’re washed and dried, simply because they feel so nice on the skin *This results in a silly and contented smile/expression on my face. My husband thinks I’m crazy when I do this*
• I feel confident using it on my baby’s skin due to its super softness. Proof: If used to wipe around those hard-to-reach baby’s creases like the armpits and under the neck, no red marks appear on the skin after that
• Since it’s organic material, I know that my baby’s skin is not exposed to harmful pesticides or chemicals
• It’s very absorbent. It soaks up water pretty fast when I wet it up before I wipe my baby (unlike microfiber which tends to repel water at the beginning) *Fact: Apparently bamboo material can absorb 60% more water than cotton*
• Easy washing. Either handwashed (if used for baby’s face & body), or machine washed (if used for wiping baby’s bottom. I place all cloth wipes in a small laundry bag). No stains after each wash either!
• The printed flannel side is very cheerful and appealing. I tend to reach for these wipes instead of my other plain cloth wipes

What I Don’t Like:

NONE! Seriously, I have nothing I don’t like about these wipes because they’re SO nice! I’m really tempted to get some more. Oh no, I really WANT more of these cloth wipes!!

Additional Comments:

The size of the baby wipe is quite generous, larger than the baby washcloths I used before. Therefore, I feel these baby wipes are very suitable to wipe larger surface areas – It’s ideal for wiping baby’s face and body for a sponge bath! I think I prefer to use my smaller sized baby washcloths for diaper changes because they’re more conveniently sized.
