Cloth Diaper Malaysia – Natural & Eco-Friendly Living, Why Not!?

Another new month signifies another Featured Shop on Cloth Diaper Malaysia. This month, we are featuring SENTUHAN BAYU: In Support of Green & Natural Parenting.

About Sentuhan Bayu:

Sentuhan Bayu is a newly launched online shop which carries products such as Cloth Diapers from well-known brands, and also natural and organic care for moms and babies. Its main branch is in Kota Damansara, with a small retail store located at Kampung Batu Laut. They are a strong supporter towards green living & they actively get involved in local community associations.

I’m very happy to have a chance to chat with the owner of Sentuhan Bayu, Lily (L-H.Bajuri).

Cloth Diaper Malaysia: You aim to promote “Green & Natural Parenting”. Can you tell us more about this?

L-H.Bajuri: I think parents today take the easy way out in bringing up children, including myself. I wanted to be ‘efficient’ with my children. However, I discovered that it gives a huge impact to our environment, our own babies & the others around us. Disposable Diapers are extremely convenient and saves time. I realized though, with so many babies out there who use these diapers until the age of 3, imagine how much landfill is required to throw away all those disposable diapers! That was when I decided to do my part and start Cloth Diapering.

When it comes to food, I think children today consume too much ‘fast food’. If you look at the baby aisle in convenience stores, there so many pre-made baby cereals, cookies etc. It’s convenient for mothers, but do we know the effects of these processed foods? There are so many obese kids now compared to 10 years ago, and our food is to blame. With this in mind, I decided to cook rice for my baby. At least she eats real food.

My point is, however small the steps that you take to improve the environment, you will still make a difference! You can do things like: Bring your own shopping bags, use cloth wipes, cloth pads, cotton towels & reusable food containers, change your laundry detergent, and many more. It  all adds up. This is why I strongly promote Green & Natural Parenting.

CDM: You have several brands of Cloth Diapers available on your shop: Autumnz, Envibum, Bum Genius, Happy Heiny’s and Sweet Doll Baby. How can you help your customers choose according to their budgets?

L-H.Bajuri: Cloth Diapering doesn’t have to be expensive, it depends on your budget.  Here are my tips:

• If you want to save money: Check out the Pre-Owned Category. The quality is good & in working condition, and the prices are less than RM 20! Another way to save is to sign up with our newsletter to gain great weekly discounts, only for limited customers.

• If you have a bigger budget: BumGenius & Happy Heinys are good choices for great quality Cloth Diapers. They are imported from USA, durable, absorbent & have better sizing.
• If you want to splurge: Envibum are premium, high quality one sized All-in-One cloth diapers. The super soft minkee outer and 100% natural unbleached cotton makes it really comfortable!

CDM: I think not many of us is familiar with the brand of ENVIBUM cloth diapers. Can you tell us why these diapers are special? How is your experience using them?

L-H.Bajuri: With Envibum All-in-One cloth diapers, there is no need for re-stuffing, no worries about build-up or stripping your diapers, and no need for resizing (thanks to its smart design). I love Envibum because of these features, it’s so convenient and easy to use! It has pockets to adjust its absorbency with, it is durable & it is made of yummy minky. The lining is unbleached cotton, so its very gentle on baby’s skin. The baby will feel wetness if they wear Envibum, which is good because it can help with encouraging potty training. CDM: You are also planning to launch your own brand of Cloth Diapers, Bayu Diapers. Can you provide us a sneak preview/introduction for them?

L-H.Bajuri: Personally, I look for cloth diapers made from suede material which are affordable. Why do I choose suede over the more common, microfleece? This is because it’s easier to clean, much more stain resistant & it won’t pill. Therefore, I come up with suede cloth diapers – Bayu Diapers. Each Bayu diaper is handmade by the Kampung Moms, and accesorised with cute buttons. No two Bayu Diapers are alike! The price range will be affordable, because my aim is to encourage more people to cloth diapering The diapers will be released next month.

CDM: What is your advice to someone who is new to Cloth Diapering but unsure about what Cloth Diaper to use?

L-H.Bajuri: If you are new to cloth diapering, I strongly suggest using One Size Pocket Diaper with Velcro closure. Why? It is value for money: You can use it from size S to L, wonderful if you are diapering more than 1 baby, it is easier for you to swap in case you don’t like them, & it dries fast. Using Velcro closure is the closest to using disposable diapers. It is easier to convince and get your husband, grandma, daycare,etc to use the diapers, as easy as disposables! For daycare, you can easily preset the size accordingly & pre-stuff with inserts before using.

CDM: How many Cloth Diapers should they buy for a start? Any other tips for beginners?

L-H.Bajuri: Get 6 sets. This will allow you to fully cloth diaper for half a day and proceed from there. It’s important for you as a Mom to discover the practicality of Cloth Diapers for your lifestyle. It helps you to answer questions like: “Can I change the diaper every 2 -3 hours? Can I deal with the leakage? Can I handle the laundry part successfully? Does it consume a lot of my time?” If you can manage it well, then you can increase your Cloth Diaper stash. Ideally, you’ll need 24 Cloth Diapers if you want to fully cloth diaper, but start small if you feel the initial investment is too much.

Once you feel comfortable cloth diapering, maybe you can add All-in-Ones or Hybrid Diapers to your stash, they are perfect for traveling. Also, use skin barrier on baby’s skin to prevent nappy rash. Try either Burt’s Bees Nappy Ointment, Earth Mama Baby Angel Bums care or Magic Stick. Or if you want cheaper solution, coconut oil will do the trick. If you happens to see small red bumps, just put Agnesia powder or Calamine Lotion, the rash will go away in no time. Just remember to put the liner if your diaper lining is microfleece.
